Tolerances We Cast To

The tables below give our standard achievable tolerances. Class D1 applies to general dimensions and class D2 to selected functional dimensions. Tighter tolerances on individual features can usually be agreed at the drawing review stage, or achieved by machining after casting.

Factors a Casting Designer Should Consider

A few design choices at the drawing stage make the difference between a casting that runs easily and one that fights the process. Our engineering team is happy to review your part before tooling is cut.

Section Design

Keep wall sections as uniform as possible and taper heavy sections into thin ones. Abrupt changes in thickness invite shrinkage and hot tears. Minimum wall thickness is 3.00 mm.

Desirable Radius

Generous fillets and radii, typically R 0.30 to R 0.50 minimum at internal corners, spread stress, improve metal flow and extend die life considerably.

Cast Holes

For through holes, depth H = 3D where D > ø7 and H = 2D where D < ø7. For blind holes, L = 2D where D > ø7 and L = 1D where D < ø7, with D ≥ ø2.

Have a drawing with tight tolerances?

Send it across and we will confirm which dimensions can be held as cast and which are better achieved by machining, before any tooling is committed.
